Alston, at the confluence of the South Tyne with the River Nent in the North Pennines, is the highest market town in England. At the beginning of the 20th century it was still at the heart of the lead-mining industry, and some of the atmosphere of bygone years is retained in the steep cobbled streets, the market cross and the old-fashioned fronts of some of the shops.
With stunning views across the Tyne Valley, the Cumberland is a fine example of an English inn. 5 en-suite bedrooms, hearty pub fare and award-winning ales await the visitor, and with customer service to match. Muddy boots, bikes and pets all welcome. Free wi-fi throughout. Rated #1 on Trip Advisor for food in Alston, Booking.com rating 8.9 (Nov 2018).
