Keld is not the bottleneck it once was on the Coast to Coast route. The Youth Hostel was sold and reopened as Keld Lodge, a hotel with bar and restaurant also open to non-residents. There are B&B in Keld, as well as working farms offering B&B. Camping facilities are also on offer. You’ll get a last glimpse of Dales scenery before the bleak Durham moors. Go and take a look at Kisdon Force waterfall. It is also possible to divert from the Coast to Coast just before Keld and follow a trail to Tan Hill - this will add about two miles to the walk from Kirkby Stephen. Apart from some isolated farms this pretty cluster of houses is the first settlement you come to in the long and beautiful valley of Swaledale, exactly at the point where the Coast to Coast route crosses the Pennine Way. The hamlet, built of the same grey limestone which forms the crags and loud waterfalls along the nearby River Swale, seems to grow naturally out of the landscape.
We offer you a warm welcome to Greenlands B&B, on the outskirts of Keld in Upper Swaledale from where you can enjoy stunning views up and down Swaledale. We are close to both the Wainwright Coast to Coast route (0.8 miles) and the Pennine Way/ Herriot Way (1 mile from Keld or 1.1 miles from Thwaite (bottom of Great Shunner Fell). We are fully equipped for walkers and cyclists. There is a small drying area for wet clothing and muddy boots, laundry service and secure bike storage. (Please note secure bike storage is at your own risk). To explore the Dales you can choose from walking, cycling, spotting scenes from James Herriot; (The TV series in the late 1970s "All Creatures Great and Small"), exploring Yorkshire's rich heritage, or mooching round the lovely market towns of Richmond, Leyburn, Hawes or Barnard Castle and delightful villages such as Reeth, Muker and Keld.
