The settlements of the Upper Borrowdale consist of a number of discrete hamlets, as well as scattered farms and cottages. Each hamlet has some B&B accommodation. In addition there are hotels in Rosthwaite and Stonethwaite, where evening meals can be obtained, and a restaurant in Seatoller. There is a youth hostel at Longthwaite, and a campsite at Stonethwaite. The only shop is in Rosthwaite.
The Royal Oak is a small, family-run hotel, ideally situated beyond the “Jaws of Borrowdale”, six miles south of Keswick. Once an 18th Century farmhouse and former miners' tavern, the Royal Oak has been providing accommodation for visitors and walkers for over one hundred years. It has been run by the same family since 1970 and is still the perfect base from which to explore the beauty of the northern Lake District. As traditional hotels have become increasingly rare, we take great pride in maintaining our homely atmosphere and excellent value for money. Thick walls, snug bar and sitting room with open fire all add to the hotel’s cosy character.
