Bath, with its handsome buildings, blends into its natural amphitheatre in the Avon Valley. Spring water here was identified by the Romans for its therapeutic qualities. They are the only natural hot springs in Britain. Remains of their town, Aquae Sullis, can be seen in the Pump Room Museum. Bath suffered badly from air raids in WW2; two hundred buildings of historical and architectural importance were damaged, and the ancient windows of the abbey were broken. The Building of Bath Museum illustrates how the modern city, with all its Georgian splendour, emerged from a small provincial spa. It’s a practical museum, too, showing for example how a sash window works. There are a variety of other museums in the city, such as the Jane Austen Centre, the Industrial Heritage Centre, the Postal Museum, the American Museum and Gardens, and Sally Lunn’s, the oldest house in Bath, dated to 1680. Bath Abbey - the Abbey Church of St Peter and St Paul - is a fine example of perpendicular Gothic architecture. There has probably been worship on this site since the 4th century, and the present building was begun in 1499 when the ruined Norman cathedral was demolished. The Abbey is known as ‘The Lantern of the West’ because of the light shining from its unusually large number of windows at night. The east window contains 56 scenes from the life of Christ. Here at the Abbey doorway you have reached the end of your walk. Did somebody mention springs and a hot .... bath?
The Rising Sun dates from the 1700s and is ideally situated just off the famous Pulteney Bridge and Great Pulteney Street. Only 2 minutes' walk from shops, restaurants, museums and visitor attractions, but away from the crowds, as we are located in a side street. There is a rear courtyard garden, ideal for summer dining, and a cosy bar with open fire for the not so warm evenings, serving fine wines and real ales. All rooms have en-suite facilities, toiletries, TV, hairdryer, and tea/coffee, comfy beds and fluffy towels. Fresh, home-cooked food served Wednesday to Friday from 6pm to 9pm, Saturday 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 9pm. Sunday roasts from 12.30pm to 4pm.
