This very small market town, serving the livestock farmers of the upper Eden Valley, is not quite the halfway point of the Coast to Coast walk, but it is a good place to pause and perhaps take a day’s rest before tackling the Yorkshire Dales. There is a choice of eating places including a Chinese take-away and two pubs serving meals, a supermarket, pharmacy and a few other shops as well as a wide choice of accommodation of various degrees of comfort, including a youth hostel. (For more specialised shopping requirements you will need to wait for 3 more days until you reach the larger town of Richmond). The town’s train station is a mile and a half away up a steep hill, with several trains daily connecting Leeds and Carlisle.

The Old Croft House is a Grade II listed Georgian town house situated in the market town of Kirkby Stephen, in the beautiful Eden Valley. The house dates from 1750 and has retained much of its original charm and character, each of our bedrooms has been furnished in a style suited to the period features of The Old Croft House without compromising on comfort, and with a few modern luxuries to make you feel at home. All rooms have a digital TV, tea and coffee facilities, hairdryers and free wi-fi . The superior double has an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower, whilst the double and twin rooms each have en-suite shower. The single room has its own private bathroom with shower cubicle and roll top bath just across the landing. Each room also has a foot spa and complimentary luxury toiletries from The Bath House, a local company from Sedbergh. Following a long day walking or exploring what the area has to offer, why not sooth those aching feet with a foot spa containing lemongrass bath salts?

A delightful, grade II listed Georgian house located right in the centre of Kirkby Stephen, offering spacious en-suite accommodation, and perfectly situated for restaurants, pubs, shops and launderette. All of our rooms have en-suite, colour TV, hairdryer, toiletries and tea & coffee making facilities. We have a separate guests' lounge with TV, books and free wi-fi throughout the house. We offer an extensive breakfast menu, catering for all diets, which can be served from 7am. Packed lunches and sandwiches can be ordered on arrival. All of our guests are welcomed with tea/coffee and refreshments. We have secure, indoor cycle storage and the house is non-smoking. Check in from 3.30pm-6.30pm. Earlier or later times can be pre-arranged. An excellent location for a rest day.
