This pretty moorland village at the head of the Allen Valley was a leading lead mining centre during the 19th century. The Allenheads Heritage Centre depicts the story of the lead industry in this area. This friendly little hamlet, almost hidden by pine trees, is no longer surrounded in slag heaps and shrouded in smog - instead it welcomes you with its babbling beck and good places to eat and rest.
Situated in the heart of the North Pennines, Allenheads Lodge makes an excellent venue for outdoor activities, an ideal halfway house on the C2C cycle route or for just relaxing in the peaceful surroundings. The Lodge has 24 beds in 4 separate dormitories, is fully central heated with separate toilets and showers and a large kitchen and dining room.

Right on the original C2C route, this is a lovely 18th century village inn and a must for cyclists who enjoy atmosphere, hospitality and all-round rustic comfort. Fine ales and big helpings of tasty fare make this probably the most popular stop-off on the entire route.
