Hadrian's Wall East

Mile 1

Bowness on Solway

The village fits into the area of the Roman fortress called Maia, the second largest fortress on the wall at over 2 hectares. Hadrian’s Wall was not so substantial at this marsh end, so a large garrison was needed to stop the Picts from attacking across the firth at low tide.
