Pennine Way

Mile 55

Stanbury

Stanbury is a pleasant village of stone houses, overlooking the Worth Valley as it slips down from the higher Pennines through picturesque woodland. This is Brontë country, with Top Withens close by, believed to have been the inspiration for Emily's Wuthering Heights. Ponden Hall might have been Thrushcross Grange. Stanbury St Gabriel's is a low stone church. The 19th century Methodist Chapel is now a private house.
