Brompton-on-Swale is located around three miles east of Richmond. The Farmers Arms is the village's main pub, and also offers accommodation. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Brunton in lands owned by Count Alan of Brittany. The Count had granted the manor to the constable of Richmond Castle, Enisant Musard after 1086, with the previous lord at the time of the Norman conquest being a local man named Thor.

A former Bryer, the barn is stone built with a slate roof. There are washing facilities and a tumbler dryer. Showers and gas fires are included and there is a self catering kitchen. Brompton-on-Swale Camping Barn is situated in the pituresque village of Brompton-on-Swale itself. The barn is only a few minutes walk from the pubs and is right opposite the shop and Post Office where visitors will find plenty of local food available. Brompton Camping Barn can accommodate up to 12 people in 3 separate four bunk rooms with the WC and shower. The barn is equipped with cooking facilities, electricity and a heater. There are also pans, cutlery and crockery. Bedding is provided plus sleeping sacks for a small fee. Campsite available for five tens, shower and toilet available. Bookings to be made with the Youth Hostel Association Central Reservations.

The Barn is half a mile from Catterick Bridge, where the Coast to Coast walk continues, and the town of Richmond - also on the Coast to Coast route, is 3 miles away.

A former coaching inn dating back in parts to the mid-1700s, The Farmers Arms is very pleasing to the eye, inside and out. The exterior is a large and impressive stonebuilt structure. The interior is equally gracious and extensive, with the attractive bar and lounge having exposed beams, and a bright, stylish conservatory dining area. Meals are served at lunch and dinner in the bar, lounge, beer garden or non-smoking conservatory dining area, which seats 32. Booking is advised for Friday and Saturday evenings. At present there are two guest bedrooms, a double and a twin, both en suite and with their own separate entrance. The tariff includes a delicious and hearty breakfast ideal to set guests up for a day's walking or sightseeing.

Close to where the B6271 meets the A6136 at Catterick Bridge Overnight necessities to be carried as access to this location for delivery and collection is too limited.
