Yorkshire Dales

The Yorkshire Dales was made a National Park in 1954 because of it's wide range of stunning scenery, in particular the natural limestone architecture, potholes, crags and limestone pavement. The Yorkshire Dales also has a lot more to offer including, sweeping moors, waterfalls and traditional picturesque villages. More and more people are discovering the pleasures of country walking and cycling, and this is definitely the best way to experience the Yorkshire Dales.

The Yorkshire Dales provides some of the best scenic walking and cycling in the country. The finest long-distance walks also pass through the Yorkshire Dales, including the Pennine Wayand the Coast to Coast Walk If you are planning a trip to the Yorkshire Dales then there are three great walking and cycling tours covered by the Sherpa Van Project’s support services

The Dales Way
This much loved long distance path, runs right across the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Gradients and terrain are easy, but the going may be muddy underfoot in wet weather. There are also a large number of "stiles" and "kissing gates" to negotiate. The itinerary follows Wharfedale (where there is time to admire the ruins of Bolton Abbey) and then Langstrothdale, gradually gaining height upstream to reach the Pennine watershed at Cam Fell (1700 feet). This Yorkshire Dales trail then runs down Dentdale to the market town of Sedbergh and across sheep pastures to Bowness on Windermere.

The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Route
The Yorkshire Dales circular cycle route starts and finishes in Skipton, and can be divided in to six day-stages, of 20-25 miles each. The cycle way takes you through some of the Northern England's best scenery and is a good way to see the best of the Yorkshire Dales, as it takes you through 6 dales, Wharfedale, Malhamdale, Ribbledale, Dentdale, Wensleydale & Swaledale.

The Herriot Way
The Herriot Way is named, of course, after James Herriot who moved to the Yorkshire Dales in the late 1930s to start a veterinary practice. The rest as they say is history. His books about life in the Yorkshire Dales became particularly popular in the 1970s, when Herriot discovered that there was no end to the average animal lover’s desire for his incidental and sentimental anecdotes. By the late 70’s this interest spawned a film and a very successful TV series based on his life.

This Yorkshire Dales walk visits a lot of the places where he lived and worked. The conventional way to walk the Herriot Way is anti-clockwise, starting and finishing at Aysgarth Falls. However there is no golden rule which states that the tour has to be walked in this direction.
