West Highland Way

The West Highland Way is a 92 mile national long-distance trail through the south-western part of the Scottish Highlands that starts at the village of Drymen just outside Glasgow. The West Highland Way includes large sections of Loch Lomond, valley routes through the mountains.

The West Highland Way passes close to somber Glencoe, famed for its massacre of the MacDonald Clan, and finishes at Fort William near the foot of Ben Nevis, (Britain's highest peak, which can be readily ascended if you choose to spend an extra day in Fort William at the end of your walk). The West Highland Way is a well established and popular route with an altitude range from sea-level to 1850 ft (or 4408 ft if Ben Nevis is climbed).

Typical West Highland Way Itinerary
Day 1 Drymen: Travel to Drymen, the starting point of the West Highland Way, a small town north of Glasgow that is a gateway to the highlands.
Day 2 Rowardennan: Gentle scenery on the bonny banks of Loch Lomond. (14 miles/6 hours)
Day 3 Crianlarich: A ferry crossing and taxi (included). Ride along the shore of loch Lomond to the start of today's stage of the West Highland Way. This is to avoid deteriorated footpaths along the lake shore. Then a pretty walk up Glen Falloch (10 miles/4 hours).
Day 4 Bridge of Orchy: The valley route via Tyndrum past the peaks of Ben Lui and Ben Dorain to Loch Tulla, a beautifully situated lake surrounded by Scots pines (14 miles/7 hours)
Day 5 Glencoe: Across the wild heather clad wastes of Rannoch Moor. (10 miles/4 hours)
Day 6 Kinlochleven: Up the Devil's staircase to 1850 ft then a long descent to sea level at the head of Loch Leven. From here we follow the 'Road to the Isles'. (11 miles/5 hours)
Day 7 Fort William: The final part of the West Highland Way. Past the steep slopes of the Mamore hills and over Lairigmor Pass to Glen Nevis past foot of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak (4408ft) (12 miles/5 hours)
