National Trail Guide: Pennine Way South- Edale to Bowes  by Tony Hopkins
This is the South edition of a two volume guide. Written and published in association with the Countryside Commission and the Ordnance Survey, it claims to be the official guide to the Pennine Way. Where other writers draw their own large scale maps, this book does give you the support of the genuine 1:25,000 OS version, in a strip alongside the route finding instructions. It’s a shade unfortunate that the book’s size is at the outer limit of what can be called a pocket guide, and you might find it’s not really convenient to handle as you walk along.

Pennine Way  by Terry Marsh
Terry Marsh begins with a beautifully written survey of the walk: from the vastness of the Kinder and Bleaklow massifs to the unrivalled limestone beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, the route courts the boisterous Tees, gets to grips with Cross Fell and eases down into the cobbled streets of Alston on its way to the Roman Wall, that glory of the far-flung Roman Empire and the delectable Cheviot Hills. Not for Marsh the grudging respect afforded to the long flat topped, bog-scarred, rainswept Pennines found in so many guide books. He will encourage you to cling to every last centimetre of your adventure.

Pennine Way. The all in one practical guide for walkers  by Martin Collins
Collins introduces his guide with a practical section, full of good sense under the main headings you need to consider as you plan your trip: terrain and weather, equipment and safety, supplies and accommodation, maps and waymarking. For those unfamiliar with the early 20th century struggles by walkers to obtain freedom on the hills his Background section is concise and readable. In 1932 six ramblers, fighting for your right to set out across Kinder Scout at the beginning of your Pennine Way, went to jail.
