About Ancrum There is a public telephone here. There is a pub here. There is a grocery shop here. There is a post office here.

Ancrum has a pleasant village green. There are 12th century records, though little remains of the old village, which was destroyed three times by the English in cross-border raids. The stone market cross dates back to the 13th century, though it may have been moved a little. At the east end of the village there are walls, believed to be on the site of the Bishop’s Palace. A kilometre to the east is the Harestanes Visitor Centre, open from 1st April to 31st October. From here there are several way-marked and guided short walks round the farm estate. There is also a lively programme of traditional countryside activities; check to see what coincides with your visit. One walk is to the Waterloo Monument, which has a spectacular platform, allowing you to view your progress along St Cuthbert’s Way and to have a look at the land ahead.
