 About Newcastle

The home of “Newky Brown,” Newcastle United” and “Viz” Comics! The Tyne bridge arches over the river (opened in 1928), the model for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There is also George Stephenson’s Dual High level Bridge 1849 (road and rail). The low swing Bridge dates from 1876 and stands where the Roman Bridge existed. Past the Guildhall you will find Bessie Surtees House a 16th Century merchant’s house. The Castle Keep, built in 1080 by the son of William the Conqueror,is very similar to Dover Castle. In the University is the Museum of Antiquities which houses the best “Wall” finds.
