Attractive Pennine village at head of valley. Originally mill village - still has one working mill. Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs through village. Several pubs, cafes, restaurants and take-aways. Modern Marsden (Pop.1991: 4,256) grew as a focal point of routes crossing the Pennines. Pack horse trails, turnpike roads, canal and railway have all left their mark and you can trace the impact of the industrial revolution both on the ground and on social history, notably the Luddite and Chartist movements.
