The main road from Skipton to Kendal slices the village of Gargrave in half. Be sure to explore across the bridge into the quieter southern part. It is said that St Andrew's Parish Church was spared by the ravaging Scots because it was named after their saint. There is a display of ancient stones, fragments of Anglo Danish crosses from the 9th and 10th centuries. Inside, there is a wooden tabled carved MDXX1, the date (1521) of the building of the previous church on this site. The present one is 19th century. In the 1970s the church bells were re-cast and were waiting to be re-hung when they were stolen and taken away to be melted down. The news spread nationally, and the bells were recovered. Nowadays there is an active team of bell ringers and the church is floodlit at night.
