About Bainbridge There is a tourist information centre here. There is a pub here. There is a restaurant here. There is a cafe here.

An attractive village with a large rectangular green, comparable with that at Reeth. Every afternoon through the winter a horn is blown in the village to warn people to be off the hills before night. A mile or so up the side valley of Raydale is Semer Water, one of only two natural lakes in the Yorkshire Dales (the other is Malham Tarn). Just east of the village are the remains of a Roman fort called Virosidum. The Romans found Wensleydale a useful through route from east to west across northern England, and may also have been interested in the lead deposits of the area. The busy A684 roads passes rather close, but otherwise Bainbridge is a delightful place.

 Property type: Country Inn (Pub)

The Rose and Crown Hotel is a fifteen century coaching inn which has an old established and enviable reputation as the 'Pride of Wensleydale'. It is situated in the lovely Wensleydale village of Bainbridge overlooking the village green which is complete with mediaeval stocks and is flanked by mellow stone houses. Bainbridge was originally a settlement in the forest of Wensleydale and this memory lives on with the blowing of the forest horn each evening from Holy Rood (September 27th) to Shrovetide. The horn was blown to guide the travellers to the security of the village, and, when not in use, it hangs in the panelled hall of the Rose and Crown.

Location and supplementary information [view map]
To the north is Swaledale, to the south, Coverdale, but Wensleydale is perhaps the best known of the Yorkshire Dales and the hotel is therefore ideally positioned. It is an ideal area for touring and walking or simply enjoying the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Rivers, castles, museums and fells can be discovered via steeply rising and falling minor roads free of traffic. Bainbridge is on the A684 between Hawes and Leyburn, 35 miles from exit 34 of the M6, 26 miles from the A1 at Leeming Bar.
