The traditional starting place of the Dales Way, although an extended version of the walk now starts in Leeds. It is a long-established market town (market day is Saturday) , with its prosperity formerly based on wool (produced in the Yorkshire Dales since the middle ages); in the 19thC it became a health resort offering clean air and water to visitors from urban areas. Nowadays it still caters extensively for day visitors from the neighbouring metropolises of Leeds and Bradford as well as for Dales Way walkers and shoppers coming in from the Dales. Just south of the town is Ilkley Moor, a area of open land with heather moor and gritstone outcrops, including the Cow and Calf rocks. The Moor has been immortalised in the traditional song 'On Ilkla Moor baht 'at'. There is a variety of accommodation, including B&Bs and hotels, but no Youth Hostel. The nearest campsite is 3 miles along the Dales Way at Addingham. There is a choice of eating places, including pubs serving bar meals. There is a TIC (tourist information office) in the town. Points of interest in the town include its 16thC bridge and some 9thC crosses in the parish church.

The bed and breakfast is run by Sally who trained as a Home Economist at Ilkley College in the 1980's. After running ski chalets in France, Austria and Switzerland she followed a career in the hospitality and conference industries and has now returned 'home' to Ilkley to run her first B and B.
