The archetypal Dales way village with whitewashed stone houses and rough cobbled streets. There are two village pubs, a store open everyday during the Summer, a range of accommodation and tea shops. The George and Dragon brews its own beer called, originally, `Dent Beer`. The village grew up on the wool trade and the women used to sit in galleries and knit so furiously that they became known as the "Terrible Knitters of Dent". Later the village became renowned for its marble and for Adam Sedgwick (1785 - 1873), a pioneer in geology. The cost of staying in the village will not leave a dent in the pocket.
