About Burneside There is a public telephone here. There is a pub here. There is a grocery shop here. There is a restaurant here. There is a sandwich shop here. There is a public lavatory here. There is a post office here. There is a bus stop here. There is a railway station here.

On the march into Burneside you will pass through Firbank, Patton and Skelsmergh Parishes. On the route and just off it there are a number of B&Bs run from farms and private houses. Burneside is on the line between Windermere and Oxenholme with trains to each about once every two hours. These stations connect into the railway system with the rest of the country. One of the nicest places in Burneside to go to is the Jolly Anglers Inn for some fireside respite. An old feature of the village is Burneside Hall which is a 14th C. Pele Tower. These were built as a defensive function against the cross border raiding that went on involving Reivers; bands of merry men in lightweight armour and quilted jackets, carrying claymores, spears, compact crossbows and later muskets. The reivers were primarily interested in stealing cattle, but would enjoy the odd village burning, pilfering and rape if they could get away with it.These sorts of activities plagued the borders country way into the 18th C before the reiving families were politically neutralised. During a raid the bell would ring in the tower and the locals would take shelter along with any animals that they could muster. The 'Mill' marked on the OS map, is not a remnant wool or cotton one, but in fact produces paper. In the village you will find shops and accommodation and will find that the popular lakeland resort town of Kendal is only short hop by bus or train.
