Dales Way

Mile 72

Burneside

On the march into Burneside you will pass through Firbank, Patton and Skelsmergh Parishes. On the route and just off it there are a number of B&Bs run from farms and private houses. One of the nicest places in Burneside to go to is the Jolly Anglers Inn for some fireside respite. An old feature of the village is Burneside Hall which is a 14th century Pele Tower. These were built as a defensive function against the cross border raiding that took place involving Reivers - bands of merry men in lightweight armour and quilted jackets, carrying claymores, spears, compact crossbows and later muskets. The reivers were primarily interested in stealing cattle, but would enjoy the odd village burning, pilfering and rape if they could get away with it. These sorts of activities plagued the borders country way into the 18th century before the reiving families were politically neutralised. During a raid the bell would ring in the tower and the locals would take shelter along with any animals that they could muster. In the village you will find shops and accommodation.
