About Osmotherley
Osmotherley is undoubtedly one of the most attractive villages. Old green village, named after “Asmundrelac” Norse for Asmund’s clearing. Famous for its stone clad houses, market cross, and Wesleyan Methodist chapel from 1754. From an agricultural basis the town doubled in population with the advent of the weaving industry (Cote Ghyll Mill /Youth Hostel was a mill until 1915).
There are three pubs, each serving food to satisfy a variety of tastes and standards, as well as a Fish and Chip shop. The village has a food shop, a post office (three sessions per week) a walking shop and two cafes. Some may like to rest a day here; close by is Mount Grace Priory, a Carthusian foundation dating from 1398 and still in use.
