This is a small market town of considerable charm and character near the shore of Morecambe Bay, a largely tidal arm of the Irish Sea, which is linked to the town by a short canal, now disused. Many features of historical interest are preserved in the town, most notably the cobbled market square and surrounding narrow streets; there are also reminders of the former textile milling industry. Tourism has begun to make its mark on Ulverston with shops serving hikers and bikers and the Laurel and Hardy Museum but not obtrusively so.
