This is a small market town of considerable charm and character near the shore of Morecambe Bay, a largely tidal arm of the Irish Sea, which is linked to the town by a short canal, now disused. Many features of historical interest are preserved in the town, most notably the cobbled market square and surrounding narrow streets;
there are also reminders of the former textile milling industry. Tourism has begun to make its mark on Ulverston with shops serving hikers and bikers and the Laurel and Hardy Museum but not obtrusively so. There is a famous brewery located in Ulverston and the local brew is widely available in south Cumbria. There is a tourist centre (Tel. 01229 587120)

Virginia House is a splendid Georgian Town House in the quaint market town of Ulverston just on the Southern edge of the Lake District National Park. Run by husband and wife team, Craig & Louise Sherrington, this is somewhat of a hidden gem!! Behind the elegant facade is a warm and welcoming family run guest house, with an intimate bar specialising in gin, and quite surprisingly, an exceptionally good restaurant headed up by Chef Craig Sherrington who was a national finalist on BBC2 Great British Menu 2018 - showcasing fabulous food and the very best of Cumbrian produce!! It's the perfect start to a wonderful walking holiday! Having accreditation of 2AA Rosettes, an entry in the Waitrose Good Food Guide and serving dinner 5 nights a week Tuesday - Saturday it is strongly recommended that you book a table if you wish to experience Craig's food for yourself - it's that popular!!
