Orton is a good stopping pace for those who want to follow the long hard day from Patterdale to Shap with a short easy one. If you walk from Shap to Kirkby Stephen in one day (20 miles) you will probably have to miss Orton out altogether, which is a pity as it is one of the prettiest villages on the whole Coast-to-Coast route, pleasantly located at the base of a limestone escarpment. It also boasts a chocolate factory.
