About Kirkby Stephen There is a tourist information centre here. There is a public telephone here. There is a pub here. There is a outdoor shop here. There is a grocery shop here. There is a restaurant here. There is a sandwich shop here. There is a bank here. There is a public lavatory here. There is a cashpoint here. There is a pharmacy here. There is a post office here. There is a cafe here. There is a bus stop here. There is a railway station here. There is a bank here.

This very small market town, serving the livestock farmers of the upper Eden Valley (England`s own Garden of Eden) is not quite the halfway point of the Coast-to Coast tour, but it is a good place to pause and perhaps take a day`s rest before tackling the Yorkshire Dales. There is a choice of eating places including a Chinese take-away and two pubs serving meals, a supermarket, pharmacy and a few other shops as well as a wide choice of accommodation of various degrees of comfort, including a youth hostel. (For more specialised shopping requirements you will need to wait for 3 more days until you reach the larger town of Richmond). The town`s train station is a mile and a half away up a steep hill, with several trains daily in each direction could be useful if you are returning to St Bees from this point. There is a a small platform shop at Kirkby Stephen railway station, which provides light refreshments, homemade soup and rolls etc. Alternatively you could use the train service from Leeds to start the second half of the Coast-to-Coast tour at Kirkby Stephen.

Stenkrith House is a lovely stone built, double fronted house built around 1820. The house is enclosed in its own walled gardens, with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. The wonderful garden slopes gently down towards the Eden River and you can hear the water rushing over the spectacular Cowcarni Waterfall. Denise and Mike have lived in the Eden Valley all their lives and are passionate about the area. In fact on most days you will probably spot Denise walking Meg their spaniel across the fields and local pathways, quite often directing lost coast to coasters. The house is less than 10 mins walk into the centre of the town, with a population of less than 2000. Kirkby Stephen a lovely unspoilt traditional market town and one of the main stop off points for Wainrights Coast To Coast walk. Kirkby received its Royal Chatter as a market town in1353 and all town life is still centred around the Market Square which has a range of lovely little unique shops where you can find local jam, cakes, cheese, fashion, curios, antiques, meat, there are also a selection of pubs and cafes. Just over the road from the house is the main gate to Stenkrith Park, which provides access to the River Eden, the Poetry Walk and the Viaduct Walk and the Millennium Bridge. Alternatively you can take the path to the river towards Kirkby town centre and feed the ducks at Franks Bridge the start of the Coast to Coast walk to Keld, or try some local walks to nearby villages of Hartly, Winton or Nateby or longer walks to Nine Standards or Wild Boar. Currently two rooms are available for B&B, one double and one twin, we can consider different options and some times a family room is available so it is advisable to call to discuss your needs. All rooms have modern en-suite shower rooms. The bed rooms have been designed to a high standard and are kept in immaculate condition. We are sure you will have a perfect nights sleep at Stenkrith House. Included in the rooms are tea/coffee making facilities, bottled water, a range of toiletries, a foot spa for those aching feet, plus local reading material.
