 About Bolton-on-Swale

When you reach this tiny village in the midst of the flat, rather dull Vale of Mowbray you have seen the last of the River Swale, the most persistent feature of the Coast to Coast route. Bolton`s main claim to fame is as the burial place of Henry Jenkins, who was born at nearby Ellerton in 1500 and died there 169 years later. Take a short detour into Scorton and visit Joan`s Tea Room (in the village hall) which is open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. You will be tempted by her home made cakes, scones or a bacon sandwich with plenty of tea or coffee. There is also a village shop and Post Office in the village of Scorton near Bolton on Swale on the route of the Coast to Coast. Open 7am – 7pm Mon –Fri and 7am –5 pm Sat. It has a Food Hygiene 5 star rating and sell a wide range of goods including soft drinks, freshly made sanwiches and a range of pies and a coffee machine for freshly ground coffee. Further along the route, Kiplin Hall a Jacobean country house on the B6271 Scorton – Northallerton road. The Hall was built by George Calvert, founder of Maryland, USA, in the 1620s. Lots of Coast-to-Coasters stop at Kiplin Hall looking for refreshments en route from Richmond to Danby Wiske. From February, the Gardens, Grounds and Tea Room will be open Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am until 4pm (April – September, Gardens and Grounds until 6pm, Tea Room until 5pm). The Hall itself is open for visitors as before, 2 – 5pm, Sunday – Wednesday from April – 30 October.
