About Edale There is a tourist information centre here. There is a public telephone here. There is a pub here. There is a grocery shop here. There is a restaurant here. There is a public lavatory here. There is a post office here. There is a cafe here. There is a bus stop here. There is a railway station here.

You can`t fail to be inspired by Edale as the starting point for your great walk. It`s a village of stone houses and attractive gardens, surrounded by the hills of the Hope Valley. Your first challenge, Kinder Scout, dominates, with its steep slopes and its long back crossing the skyline. Before you set off, it`s worth visiting the National Park Information Centre, where you can get a weather forecast and information on local conditions. There`s an interesting display, with studies of such Pennine issues as sheep farming and dry-stone walling. It`s sobering to be faced by the threats that 22 million annual visitors to the Peak District pose to the local environment. Serious suggestions for Edale in the past have included a steel works, an oil field and a reservoir; nowadays a great danger is that we will "love the place to death You will have been prepared by your reading for the fact that modern Longdendale is not the most attractive place in the Pennines. NB The sherpa baggage service only operates from Malham northward. There is no service to Edale
