 About Penrith

Known locally as the red town because of it's sandstone buildings, it provides ancient castles, squares, a market, which provides a centre for the local farming community, superb hospitality and refreshment. It's continued importance as a market place for cattle and livestock, and it's more domestic market, ensure that the town retains it's great character. Delightful alleyways run between Penrith's mainstreets, amongst them you find more specialised shops that Penrith has a reputation for, such as fudge, cumberland sausage and gingerbread. There are many traditional pubs serving real ales, fine lagers and good food. Restaurants and tearooms are also to be found. The town is looked over by the famous Beacon which acted as a link for a communication train that ran the length of the country. There are two cycle shops and a hire shop in Penrith (tel: 01768 890344/864475).

Kelleth Old Hall is a Grade II listed manor house dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is thought to have been built by Thomas Carleton of Appleby Castle; it is known to have had connections with the Whitehead family, including George Whitehead, founding member of the Quaker movement. Throughout its 300 year history, the house has been little changed. It is full of delightful architectural features - stone-mullioned windows, a huge fireplace, flagstone floors, deep sills, original panelled cupboards. The house has grandeur yet charm, scope yet intimacy. Its views, south-facing over the bronze-coloured, soft-topped Howgill Fells, are epic and unspoilt.
