The lovely village of Patterdale lies at the southern end of Ullswater, which is the second largest lake in the Lake District - and to many it is the most beautiful. The village is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, including Helvellyn, which, at 3,118 ft and with its challenging approach via Swirral Edge or Striding Edge, is a wonderful day out for any walker. Patterdale is directly on the Coast to Coast route and has all the services a walker could need - a traditional pub with open fire, good beers and bar meals, a shop and post office which caters well for walkers and was the first shop to sell Wainwright’s books, a good selection of B&Bs, a youth hostel and a camp site. And if you`re planning to stay a bit longer, there are numerous walks and cycle routes from Patterdale, and Ullswater Steamers provide the opportunity to enjoy the mountain scenery from the lake.
