With justification, Cheltenham claims to be Britain`s most complete Regency town, and all the architecture of modern development has to be sympathetic with this image. In 1716 a mineral spring was discovered in a village along the Cotswold edge. Within a century Cheltenham had developed into one of the great spa towns of Europe. The town`s wide streets and tree-lined avenues were built at the beginning of the 19th century; distinctive streets include Landsdowne Crescent, with its convex curve, and Royal Crescent, whose curve is concave. The Promenade has Greek terraces on one side, smart shops on the other, and at the top end a statue of Neptune, commanding a fine fountain. The Rotunda, looking like the Pantheon in Rome, was the Montpellier Spa. The composer Gustav Holst was born at Number 4, Clarence Road, in 1874; his Regency house is now a museum. It illustrates furniture of the Regency, Victorian and Edwardian periods, with a working kitchen and scullery. Items belonging to Holst`s family are on display, including his piano and some of his music. The Pump Room overlooks the park and the lake. You can have a sip of the spa water if you like; they say it`s good for all manner of ailments that might beset a long distance walker: constipation, rheumatism, gout. A museum displays the outfits worn by fashion-conscious Cheltenham ladies and gents in the 18th century. It`s a fine modern town, too; the High Street is pedestrianised and has the full range of national stores and fashionable shops. There are three annual Cheltenham festivals: music in July, literature in August, and the national hunt

 Property type: De Luxe Hotel

We are the closest Cheltenham hotel to the Cotswold Way, so you won't have a long slog at the end of the day when you're tired. Charlton Kings Hotel is small but sophisticated, informal but tasteful, individual but professional. We offer much more than a B & B and are a lot friendlier than a bland corporate or chain hotel. You will be well looked after here by nice, intelligent people. (Who by the way have walked a few long distance paths in their time). We like dogs, so you can bring yours. We're not too fussed about muddy boots (as long as you don't get into bed with them on). Our food is honestly and carefully prepared. It is not show-off, gourmet-style food, just decent ingredients and home-made as far as possible. We specify free range eggs and chickens. Our meat (including Gloucester Old Spot Pork) comes from a local butcher who sources it from the Sudeley Castle Estate. We can make a packed lunch for you.
