Comments by walkers who stayed at White Gill House in Kirkby Stephen on The Coast to Coast Path
I recently stayed at White Gill House on my C2C walk. I would highly recommend this B&B to any walkers - Ken and Barbara are walkers themselves and understand their needs - they have walked the C2C themselves. There is exceptional attention to detail in their property - they have tried to think of every possible thing a walker could need - even to needle and thread! The breakfast was superb with lovely fresh fruit - my favourite!

A stay with Ken & Barbara is one of the highlights of our trek; everything about it is just terrific. This is our second time there and would book it again in a heartbeat.

This was by far our most favourite stay on the walk! Barbara and Ken are just the most loveliest people and their hospitality is first class. We were greeted with tea, crumpets and fruit loaf and able to sit in the beautiful garden and enjoy the amazing views. Our room was just fabulous and there was nothing you could not wish for- fantastic shower and gorgeous fluffy towels!
Thank you so much Barbara and Ken for a memorable stay - we hope to come again one day!

We cannot say enough about White Gill House! Our welcome on a rainy, chilly day was warm; tea and cookies and conversation.
Our room was stunning; lovely linens, fluffy towels and terrific extras in the bathroom. Ken and Barbara remembered it was our anniversary from our initial conversation in March and left a card and treats on the dresser - very sweet.
The breakfast was great as was the packed lunch. But more importantly, they both really enjoy what they do and their happiness, competence and kind words stayed with us for quite a while. Ken sings while he cooks - how can you not have a good day with such a pleasant start?
Convenient to path and the town and well worth a visit.

A perfect place to stay, I don't see how it could be better. Barbara and ken are coast to coasters themselves and run the most friendly comfortable and spotless b and b you could hope to stay in. Met with tea and home made cake breakfast the best on the coast to coast, everything you could possibly want and a great packed lunch. If they have room you would be mad to stay anywhere else.

Another favourite stay! Barbie and Ken were exceptional hosts. Dried our gear and told us to take a nice long shower! They served a fantastic breakfast in the solarium.

We stayed with Barbara and Ken on July 22nd after one of our longest c2c days including a few extra miles after getting lost twice!..I have to say this was one of the most pleasant B&Bs of the 18 we stayed at. After being invited by Ken to come to the back of the house to the conservatory we began to take off our boots and rain gear outside. But Barbara told us to come right in and that the conservatory was

We stayed here the night before the start of our Coast to Coast walk.(19/7/10) Our hosts made us very welcome and we felt Ken & Barbara couldn’t do enough for us. Our room had a lovely new bathroom and the other room had huge bathroom with free standing bath. Although the bedroom decoration was slightly to fussy for my taste (but then its not my house!) it didn’t matter as it was all very clean.
We also had the use of the conservatory which made our stay very relaxing.
Breakfast was just what we needed to see us through the first day’s walking-gallons of porridge and a hearty full English for some.

As an aside, the pubs in KS were not very appealing so probably worth finding a restaurant.

We stayed with Barbara and Ken overnight on our Coast to Coast trek in June this year and can't say enough about their hospitality, room and great breakfast. Their house is immaculate and they took such good care of us. They are themselves 'Coast to Coasters' and so knew and provided for our every little need. Best value of the 17 places we stayed

Unlike most people who stay at Ken & Barbara's B & B, we are not serious walkers. We had come to KS to celebrate a Diamond Wedding. Our friend was lucky enough to secure us a cancellation at this wonderful establishment and we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay. Ken & Barbara are a such a lovely couple and they couldn't have been more welcoming. Everything was immaculate, and the attention to every detail and need was second to none. Loved the posh large shower with the shower gel/shampoo/hair conditioner dispenser! Quite luxurious. Breakfast to die for - all the trimmings you could want + a fantastic fresh fruit salad. We felt we had arrived as strangers but left as friends. Here's to the next time!

Sunday, May 23rd. Nice place to stay. Comfortable. Ken and Barbara are great hosts and Coast to Coast walkers themselves. The whole experience was top notch. In town, but off the main road. Excellent breakfast and packed lunch. Would definitely recommend.

The house, the room, the garden, the breakfast - couldn´t have been better.

Arrived late and wet - again. Barbara and Ken were fantastic, couldn't have had a warmer welcome (including hot drinks and cake). Nice room with good shower and good tea-tray selection. Breakfast was delicious with a big choice and Ken's home made bread, plus a great packed lunch too. Recommended.

Two mad Mums from Sussex. Mountain Biking the Coast 2 Coast as closely as B-Ways allowed. 7th Sept 2009.

Hey, Stay here. The best one on our trip. We were cycling but Ken & Barbara are walkers and we have the same needs. They have thought of everything. Warm cosy rooms. Fantastically clean kitted out bathroom, only thing missing was a waterproof wind up radio (only kidding). Best tea tray, if we hadn't arrived so late I'd have loved a hot chocolate and a choice of chocolate bar. Breakfast was excellently cooked, great choice and delicious porridge.
The hard work they are putting into this B& B should be highly commended and we do.
Book early though! Bike friendly. They were immediately stowed away by ken in the garage.
Thanks you two for a great stay. P.s the boiled egg went down well later over Swaledale way!

Really lovely owners, Barbara could not have made us feel more welcome when we arrived, (even though we were soaked right through!)

Rooms great, shower better and a really nice breakfast. Really would recommend staying here on route.

Thanks Ken & Barbara for making us so welcome.

Stayed July 08. Best B&B on Coast to Coast (joint winner with Swale Farm in Muker!). Amazing welcome of tea and cake in the garden - fantastic after a 21 mile day!. Room was spotless, comfy beds, lovely bath and breakfast was awesome. Also very reasonably priced. Would recommend without hesitation. Barbara and Ken are brilliant hosts.

This place was fantastic. It was a bit hard to find but when we did, it was like coming home but better. There was even foot balm in the bathroom. Barbara and Ken provided all the little luxuries you could imagine and the best breakfast on the walk. We were still talking about the real fresh fruit salad a week later.

Stayed on Sun. June 24/07.

We can't say enough good things about this B&B, or Ken & Barbara the fantastic hosts. My gosh but we loved this place! We arrived soaking wet and they ushered into their gorgeous observatory, took all our wet gear, made us feel completely welcome, and served us tea and cake. Our accommodation was spotless, roomy and oh so comfortable! Barbara lent me her jacket to walk into town for supper as mine was too wet, and Ken sang merrily in the kitchen while making our delicious breakfast! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a completely memorable stay!

Stayed at White Gill House 8th June 2007 and nearly didn't finish the walk because this place is soooo good that we would have liked to have stayed longer! SUPERB. Couldn't fault the B&B or Barbara and Ken who are a delight. Thanks for the best stay of the walk.

Like other messages, there was a very warm welcome when we arrived, with delicious tea and scones as well. The room and en-suite were very good. Barbara even booked us in for our evening meal at the Old Croft House, which was brilliant with a number of fellow walkers that we met on route at one big 'get-together'. Fantastic meal! What an array of breakfast goodies Barbara had provided - plus home made bread. Ken even drove us to the station which was a really nice touch. It was a good end to our first part of the C2C. This is one B&B not to miss.
Rob & Jenny Scott, left on 06 May 2006
Without a doubt the most welcoming B&B we stayed in. After the long haul from Shap the tea, scones & tea loaf revived our weary limbs. The room was excellent and the brilliant breakfast set us up for Nine Standards.

Ken & Barbara are avid walkers, having completed the C2C themselves.

Very highly recommended. Many thanks.

What an absolute joy, after a long day's walk, to walk through Ken and Barbara's door. A warm and genuine welcome; an immaculate room with all the comforts of home, and more; a breakfast to die for - fresh fruit and yoghurt, home made bread, full-cooked breakfast and real coffee! No corners cut here fellow walkers!
Ken and Barbara have done the walk themselves and it shows. They clearly see their experience as being one of the defining points in their lives and they are now easing the way - in style - for those of us who follow.
Of all the places we stayed at, Ken and Barbara's was quite simply the best.
A big thank you from Simon & Kathryn

This was a first class place to stay. Ken and Barbara were most welcoming and the breakfasts were the best we had during the Coast to Coast. The tea and scones were brilliant. In addition their local knowledge about places to eat in Kirkby Stephen proved invaluable. The rest of our party who stayed elsewhere were envious.
