Very friendly greeting, he actually helped us with our bags up the stairs which was appreciated. We had a really nice breakfast and I was told that the food in the restaurant was very good as well (We fancied a change and went to an Italian for a pizza) Unfortunately the room was not much. It was very small, the window wouldn't stay open, and had opaque glass in it so not much daylight, my bed was the most uncomfortable I had slept in en route, as the springs had collapsed all down the middle. I did tell them in the morning though so I am not being unfair. On the upside - great pressure on the hot water and a lovely deep bath.

One of our best stays - lovely room and bathroom and very helpful and friendly staff (the waitress in both the evening and early in the morning). The food was good - we were there on steak night - and service was excellent. Breakfast was set out well with good choice. The setting - right in the town but on a quiet lane away from the noisier pubs - meant we got good sleep - but also had access to shops close by. This would be a good place to stay if having a rest day as places to see. Would definitely recommend.

My room wasn't ready when I arrived - about 3.30pm but they let me change out of my boots etc and leave my bags in the room which left me free to explore Richmond.

Laundry £5 a bag - but although I was told it would take a couple of hours and I could borrow an ironing board later in the evening, I did have to chase and eventually got my washing back some 5+ hrs later.

Staff were pleasant and helpful.

We had our evening meal here and the chef made a wonderful spring greens risotto especially for us – the previous evening’s menu had not been taken down from outside the pub. The staff were very friendly and even refused a tip because of the mix up. This kind of service is what differentiates good pubs like this from the run of the mill places

A good quality stay on the C2C, friendly welcome, the largest room since the Greyhound in Shap with en-suite bath, plenty of hot water this time. Food served in bar [very good quality] or upstairs in bistro, where good quality breakfast served the next day.
£5.00 a load laundry service available [no ironing].
Lots of opportunity to eat out in Richmond, a haven of civilization after 9 or 10 days of small villages. if you have the energy, climb the castle Keep for oustanding views of town and surrounding hills.
All in all one of the best stay of the walk, highly recommended.

A great stay here. We arrived quite early, but our room was ready for us and no problem to check in early. Our welcome was very friendly and during our whole stay we noticed every staff member would go miles out of their way to accommodate you - a great team of people here.
There were two little points, we appeared to have a broken bed, but it was really late and we didn't fancy changing rooms, when we looked under the mattress it was just that the slats had not been screwed onto the bed frame and so were moving about, we put them straight and enjoyed a good nights sleep, hopefully they will now put this right. The other point was that we used the laundry service, but our clothes were not dry the next day so we had to pack them wet into our suitcases and attempt to dry them at our next destination - not ideal for coast to coasters, but I do think it was a one-off mistake.

Great welcome on a rainy day. Rooms very good, excellent large bath.
Excellent food and beer and very friendly staff.
Laundry service also provided.
I would certainly use again.

Good room and enthusiastic welcome. The first floor bistro is excellent with good food and quick service. The rooms were noisy in the early hours from departing revellers (although it was a Friday night).

Attractively refurbished pub just of the main square. My bedroom was at the rear of the hotel and I had no problem with noise. A good breakfast was served in the Bistro Restaurant. I didn't eat here in the evening but the menu looked interesting and I wished I had. In a good, central location The Black Lion ticked a lot of boxes and I would certainly recommend it.

We stayed here for two nights as we had a rest day to explore Richmond. We had a very spacious, comfortable room at the front of the pub which was really nice. The only disadvantage was we did get a lot of noise in the early hours from people in the street returning from their night out ( we did stay there on a Fri and Sat night.) The evening meal was really very very good and there was a nice atmosphere. The food at breakfast was good but it was a little disorganised and served without a smile.

We stayed at the Black Lion on 16 June 2009. A very lively hotel with great food and a good atmosphere. Although the Bistro was closed, there is a quiet room towards the back of the hotel if you don't want television with your dinner. Excellent food and a very comfortable room.

Overall good. We had a family room for 3 of us which (although 4 flights of stairs up) was roomy and pleasant. Breakfast was completely disorganised though - we had to ask for cups and bowls, the first butter we were given was rancid, and we were given the smallest rations of butter and the cheapest jam we'd ever seen.
