Great Ayton is a large village four miles off the route, but it is worth staying here if you can get transport back in the morning to restart the walk. There are several B&Bs and a nice pub. There is also a restaurant and café. At milepost 44 (Easby Moor), you’ll find Captain Cook’s Memorial. This obelisk stands out on a 1,064 foot high point on the moor. It was erected in 1827 by Robert Campion of Whitby.
