Lady Anne Way

Mile 36

Bainbridge

An attractive village with a large rectangular green, comparable with that at Reeth. Every afternoon through the winter a horn is blown in the village to warn people to be off the hills before night. A mile or so up the side valley of Raydale is Semer Water, one of only two natural lakes in the Yorkshire Dales (the other is Malham Tarn). Just east of the village are the remains of a Roman fort called Virosidum. The Romans found Wensleydale a useful through route from east to west across northern England, and may also have been interested in the lead deposits of the area. The busy A684 roads passes rather close, but otherwise Bainbridge is a delightful place
