Dales Highway

Mile 43

Stainforth

The Yorkshire Dales village of Stainforth originally got its name from the ‘stony ford’ which connected two settlements on opposite banks of the River Ribble. The ford was replaced by a packhorse bridge in the 1670’s. The bridge today joins Little Stainforth with Great Stainforth. Further downstream lies Stainforth Force - this is where the river flows over a limestone shelf and cascades into a deep pool, creating an exquisite waterfall effect. Traditional grey stone cottages cluster on an uneven green next to Cowside Beck, and a small clapper bridge stretches from bank to bank. Catrigg Force, further along Stainforth Beck, is just a mile away. There is much to see, including visiting one of the best preserved limestone kilns or countless magnificent caves and caverns.
