Comments by walkers who stayed at Bridge Inn in Grinton on The James Herriot Way

A friend and I stayed at Bridge Inn when we walked the Herriot Way. It was the 3rd accommodation we'd stayed at. We had a twin room. It had all the required facilities but the bathroom, whilst spacious, appeared rather tired and could do with modernising. The beds - the most important thing after a day walking! - were comfortable. We ate dinner in the restaurant at the Inn and the food was nice. We didn't have the packed lunch as we planned to eat at Castle Bolton (lovely place and good fresh food in the restaurant) the next day. The two staff we had serving us at dinner and breakfast were both friendly and helpful.

The one thing that I didn't like was that after our bags had been dropped off by Sherpa Van they weren't taken up to our room. It's a small thing actually stood out with us as a negative point at the hotel. All the other places we stayed our bags were waiting for us in our room when we arrived. The last thing we wanted to do after a long walk was to carry our bags up the stairs to our room.

Stayed for a couple of nights and found it welcoming and with lots to offer. Room was comfortable, warm and quiet; bathroom a bit tired but lovely towels. Food and bar were superb, plenty of ales. Lots of local produce like venison and sausages with excellent service. Came third in the Friday night quiz.

This was one of the more expensive overnight stops on our itinerary and was poor value. We received a warm welcome, and the evening meal and breakfast were reasonably good, but the room was poor. The last couple of years have not been easy for places depending on tourists in the North but the Bridge Inn has seen better days. It needs some money spending on it!

For 52 per couple we felt let down. The room was poor and the mattress shocking. Food in the pub okay but generally seems disorganised. Packed lunch most expensive across the country at 9.

Lovely pub - room was clean & comfortable. Food was okay. Managed to get some washing done which was really useful.
